“When My Smile Disappeared” - Bell’s Palsy: The Day Everything Shifted!
“You never expect that one day your life will change with a smile — or rather, the loss of one.” That morning, I noticed my smile was uneven and my eyes were acting strangely. I wasn’t sure if others noticed, but deep down I knew something was seriously wrong.
By mid-afternoon, my headache intensified. My left neck ached and pulled, my eye felt “funny,” and my tongue had a metallic taste. Early evening, I felt like I might be having a stroke. When I checked my blood pressure at home, it was dangerously high, even though I’m not normally hypertensive. I repeated it, and it stayed the same. I knew I needed the ER, but first I sought Heaven’s intervention.
Faith & Mindset:
Walking into the hospital, I repeated Psalm 23 and 27. I prayed for God's help. I had the peace that even if it were a stroke, I was going to be okay. I focused on my purpose — not dying, but living to fulfill my destiny. I felt peace, calm, and the presence of angels, along with the prayers of my community supporting me.
ER Experience & Diagnosis:
At the ER, the receptionist welcomed me, and I waited about a few minutes until the nurse arrived. He promptly did the routine assessments, which I didn’t pass. My blood pressure dropped slightly but remained high. I was given an IV, monitored, and soon the doctor repeated the routine. I overheard the nurse and doctor mention "let's call it!" It was announced over the intercom, “stroke in the ER.” The nurse informed me that the call was for me.
Heart monitors were attached to me, and everyone was on alert. I was prepped for CT scans. The contrast felt strange, making me slightly nauseous and giddy. Afterwards, I was returned to my bed for continuous monitoring, including blood pressure checks and blood tests.
Finally, the doctor returned with the diagnosis: Bell’s Palsy. I accepted it calmly and was prescribed prednisone and valacyclovir to start treatment immediately.
Reflection / Encouragement:
That day was intense and frightening, but I learned the power of faith, calm focus, and trusting God in moments of crisis. Bell’s Palsy was not the end of my story — it was the beginning of my Smile Again Project journey. This journey is teaching me to see setbacks as setups and to believe that even in weakness, there’s strength and purpose.
